Memorial Milers Run the NYC Marathon!!!

On November 2, 2008 the New York City Marathon was held and two Memorial Milers, Jim Hanson and John Lynch (that’s me) went the distance. It was a beautiful day, sunny and cool, excellent running conditions for all of us “non-elite” runners.

NYC is the world’s largest marathon, with nearly 40,000 entrants this year, about one-quarter of which are from other nations.

The marathon distance is (always) 26.2 miles and the NYC Marathon takes runners through all five boroughs, starting in Staten Island, heading over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Brooklyn, through Queens, over the Queensboro Bridge to Mahnattan, up First Avenue and into the Bronx, and then back to Manhattan, down Fifth Avenue, and ending at Tavern on the Green in Central Park.

This year’s race was different as it was the first time the New York Road Runners instituted a “wave start.” This means they have different groups of runners start at different times – this year there were three groups and we were sorted by color. Runners with green bibs started at 9:40 AM, runners with blue bibs started at 10:00 AM and runners with orange bibs started at 10:20 AM. They did this to prevent overcrowding at the start and it worked very well. In past years you could wait 15 minutes to reach the starting line after the official gun went off, this year I made it to the line about one minute after my 10:00 AM start. What’s also nice is that using the electronic chip you tie to your sneaker, they send email updates every time you pass a checkpoint, which is great for friends and family so they know when to look for you on the course and can track how well you’re doing. This year, they tracked us every 3 miles through mile 16 and then every mile after that, which was really great, and a big upgrade from past years.

Jim Hanson has run more marathons than he can count and was excited that he was able to run this year for the first time with one of his three daughters. They ran the entire race together and had a great time. I’ve run the NYC marathon five times, and although this year wasn’t my personal best in terms of finishing, it was still a lot of fun. Traveling to the start is always an adventure – this year I took the subway to the Staten Island Ferry to a bus to the start, and everyone was friendly and a little bit nervous. Bottom line is, most runners do not do any training runs that are 26.2 miles long (my longest this year was 18, though I have done up to 21 miles before). So you know that, at some point in the race, you will be going farther than your longest training run, and if it’s your first marathon, then somewhere around mile 20, in the Bronx, you will be running farther than you’ve ever gone in your life!!! That, plus all the training and expectations, make for a nervous, exciting and ultimately exhilarating time before, during and after the race.

As always, the crowd support during each and every mile was phenomenal, which is what makes the NYC Marathon so special.

Finally, I was able to get all my Memorial Miles for the entire month of November finished in one day!!!!!

Day 50

50 Days and still going!

It hard to believe that it has been 50 days since the Memorial Miles team took their first walk! The team spirit is really great and continues to grow! We had our second team walk mid-October and are planning the next team walk around November 8th. Two team members have run consecutively since the start, Tom Grassi and Paul Pietropaolo. Memorial Milers have run at numerous local 5 & 10K's races and two team members, Jim Hanson and John Lynch, are going to be running in the NYC Marathon this weekend.

Keep up the good work!

Tom Grassi signing up the day of the race.
Paul Pietropaolo and Tom Grassi before the race, looking ready to go!

On Saturday, October 25, 2008 members of the Memorial Miles team ran in the Norwood, NJ 5K. Both Tom Grassi and Paul Pietropaolo were able to show the shirt! They had been predicting heavy rains for today, but it managed to hold off until after the race. Tom and Paul kept a pace around 8'-30" per mile! Tom crossed the finish line seconds ahead of Paul, and both runners were very satisfied with their effort that day!

Paul and Tom after the race, looking good (good and tired)! This was both Tom and Paul's 45th consecutive day of running!

On my drive to the race, I was on Strawtown Road in West Nyack, NY and I saw this 9/11 Memorial to the PAPD, NYPD and FDNY, just a reminder as to why we run!

Terri Roemer 10K, Paramus NJ

Today was the 30th Annual Terri Roemer 10K (6.2 Miles) in Paramus New Jersey. It was a great fall day, kinda cool actually, about 42 degrees at the start, with a field of more than 400 people!
SO, the Memorial Miles T-Shirt was there, and (who knows??) might have helped me to a new 10K Personal Best of 52:47 (beat my 'old' record by almost seven minutes!). Although cold out, it was a great fall day for a run.

As for THIS Memorial Miler, today was my 39th consecutive day (every day since Sept 11) of running at least 2 miles a day, for a total of 115 Memorial Miles.

October 10, 2008- Monthly Group Walk

On Firday, October 10th, we had our monthly Memorial Miles group walk. As this was our first walk post- 9/11 start- up, we thought it would be very fitting to visit the "Koenig Sphere", a piece of sculpture that sat in the outdoor Plaza of the World Trade Center. Although it was badly damaged by the 9/11 attacks, it was badly damaged. In 2002, the Sphere was relocated to its current location in Battery Park.

Our walk began along the Hudson River, on a perfect autumn day. We had a great view of the Statue of Libery.

When we made it to the Sphere, we spent some time there, looking at the damage it incurred, remembering all the outdoor concerts and lunches we had out on the Plaza. Here, Barbara, Armando, Jean Paul, and Amadou take a look.

Here's Kamran reading the plaque that is there, it reads:

"For three decades, this sculpture stood in the plaza of the World Trade Center. Entitled "The Sphere", it was conceived by artist Fritz Koenig as a symbol of world peace. It was damaged during the tragic events of September 11, 2001, but endures as an icon of hope and the indestructible spirit of this country. The Sphere was placed here on March 11, 2002 as a temporary memorial to all who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. This eternal flame was ignited on September 11, 2002 in honor of all those that were lost. Their spirit and sacrifice will never be forgotten."

As we got ready to head up Broadway, of course, we needed to obligatory group photo of the "Milers" who were there for our group walk. We're looking for a good destination for next month's walk!!!!

Also, as of the end of September, the Memorial Milers had walked or run a total of just over 1,200 miles!!! Paul and I have been running every day since we started. Today was day 35, I have just gone over 100 miles.

Newburgh-Beacon Bridge 5 Mile Run - Oct 12, 2008

Day 32 - Newburgh-Beacon Bridge 5 Mile Run
October 12, 2008

Today was an awesome Autumn day, a great day for a run! The Memorial Mile T-Shirt made an appearance in the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge 5 Mile run. The course started in the historic Hudson Valley City of Newburgh and over the Hudson River on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge to the historic Hudson Valley City of Beacon. The course was fun and the view from the bridge was amazing! You couldn't have asked for a better fall day! The leaves were out in full color and the air was crisp and cool. In the pictures you will see the starting line in Newburgh, the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, the finish at Beacon and pictures of the Hudson River from Beacon Train Station. I also got a picture of the Clear Water and a replica of explore Henry Hudson's sailing ship the Half Moon. All-in -all it was a great day!

The Firefighter Stephen Siller - Tunnel to Towers 5k Run/Walk

Today the Memorial Mile T-Shirt made a proud appearance at the Firefighter Stephen Siller - Tunnels to Towers 5K Run/Walk. This is an event to remember and retrace the steps the Firefighter Stephen Siller took on September 11, 2001, when he raced from the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to Lower Manhattan to the Twin Towers. This is truly a New York experience, there were over Ten Thousand runners, with firefighters from all over the region, country and world participating, as well as service men and women from the Army, Air Force. Navy, Marines and Coast Guard.

Day 10 - ORC Bull Run

Today the Memorial Mile shirt made an appearance at the Orange Runner's Club Bull Run 5k at the Thomas Bull Memorial Park in Hamptonburgh, Orange County, NY.

Paul Pietropaolo running for his 10th consecutive day ran the 3.1 mile course in 26 minutes and 25 seconds, bringing his 10 day total miles run to 29.7miles. There were about 150 runners and Paul finished 50th. The course was flat and the weather was perfect, about 65 degrees, it was a good day for a run!

Day 4 - York Lake, NY

I spent day 3 and 4 in upstate Sullivan County, NY, at my family's home near York Lake. It was a work week-end with my Dad, my brother Bob and nephew Nicolas. In between work on the house, I managed to get in 2.9 miles on Saturday (Sept. 13) and 3.3 miles on Sunday (Sept. 14) bringing my total miles run to 12.2. Let me tell you those hills upstate will kill you! Feeling great can't wait for tomorrow to run again!

Dumont Day 5K

So, the Memorial Miles T-shirt made an appearance today at a 5K race in Dumont, NJ. I had an all- time personal best time of 26:03! I'm not saying that the shirt brought me inspiration or luck or anything, but hey.........you never know.......Today was three straight days of Memorial Mile running for me, ten miles.

After the run, I posed with my future daughter-in-law's brother, and my running buddy, Kevin Corizzi, runner par excellence. He finished second overall (I didn't)l!!!

...and extra special thanks to my wonderful wife, Lisa, for getting up early on a Saturday morning, just to take pics of me running. "...but honey, it's for the BLOG!!!"

Group Walk Invitation

Good afternoon everyone'

As others have posted, I believe our first group walk was a major success! In the walk itself, but also reuniting me with a number of people that I haven't seen since 2001 (Joan did you ever get your degree?)

I wanted to thank Clarelle, Paul & Tom for their hard work and dedication in getting this activity together and thank all participants for taking part. I'm sure as the year(s) go by we will grow in number and in friendships.

I also wanted to invite all walkers to join me in a monthly 'group' walk in Jersey. I live close to Brookdale Park, and surrounding area, in Bloomfield and Branchbrook Park in Newark and both are great for walks. If anyone is interested please let me know. You can email me at sfurg05311129@gmail.com or call me on my cell at (973) 600-3445. All are welcome and so are the spouses, kids and pets!!

Have a great weekend.

Day 1!!!

Well, it was a very successful first day, with our group walk around the World Trade Center site. It was pretty amazing, to see something that was barely an idea a month ago, really happening!!
There were about fifty of us, all working on the rebuilding of the site (project managers, architects, engineers, contractors, security guards, administrators, etc, etc)- many of us 9/11 survivors. It was a great event. We took a quick break in the Winter Garden to pose for a picture.
Good luck to all!!

Day One: Laurie Spencer

Today is the kickoff walk for Memorial Miles. This is a difficult day emotionally each year, as are the weeks preceding the 11th of September. This is the first year that I am back working Downtown, and I am grateful to be here. I believe strongly in the strength that the rebuilding will return to this city. It doesn’t mean that I will ever forget the World Trade Center; on the contrary, I can close my eyes and do a “walk through”, seeing the details of the interior almost as clearly as when it stood. The North Tower was my work home for 19 years. Right now outside my window, the bell is ringing to mark the moment that it fell to the ground. Sometimes it doesn’t feel as if it’s really gone—that the towers and the people we lost simply exist somewhere else now.

My thanks go to Clarelle Charles, Tom Grassi, and Paul Pietropaolo for organizing Memorial Miles. It’s something positive for the survivors of That Day and their friends to do to honor the memory of those taken from us too early and so suddenly. We who are left behind find strength in one another, and I would rather be with other survivors on this day than with anyone else.

I am fortunate to be close friends and continue to work with the person with whom I escaped Tower One, and she is a Memorial Miler, too. Today we’ll walk together instead of running for our lives, and I hope that this small thing we do will bring comfort to others, whether they are known or unknown to us. A place, a structure, can bring forth a sense of connection that goes beyond the steel and concrete and other materials from which it is created. If I can help someone else reach that connection, this walking will be worth every step.

Tom, a Memorial Miler

Today was a great day. After a very quick burst (about a month) of planning, preparing, meeting, to see an idea really become an 'event' is a great experience. Many of the great people who work here rebuilding the WTC site are really here for 'the cause' and want to do anything and everything they can to rebuild our home, remember our friends, and renew our lives.

I hope more of the 'Milers' will share stories about why they are here, but as for me, I worked in the World Trade Center for about fifteen years when, on 9/11, I was on the 82nd Floor of One WTC as the first plane hit several floors above me. Of course, we all left immediately but I was still inside my building when Tower Two collapsed, that's when things got really crazy. I have been working on the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site since the days immediately after 9/11. It really was an honor to the the Port Authority's Engineering Department Project Manager for the construction of the Temporary PATH Station, which opened on November 23, 2003- before anyone though it could.
The photographs here are from October 12, 2001, my first visit to the site after 9/11-- one of the remnants of Tower One, and one of me near Church Street.
I've been here ever since and I can't think of another project I'd rather be working on or another group of people I'd rather be working with.

We've Broken $1000

Congratulations to all. We have made the first big step towards raising $30,000!

Our donors and sponsors are answering the call to help and doing so furiously. After only a few days available to donate, we have already broken past the $1000 marker. We are well on our way to accomplishing a great goal!

Please go to Memorial Miles to do your part!

The Eve of Something Great

Tomorrow is the day. We'll lace up the shoes and embark on our noble cause.

Things near Ground Zero seem to be humming and chaotic. September seems to be a month when reverence and rememberence really strikes home hardest in downtown NYC and the WTC is the epicenter. Being so close to the action gives a sense of pride and being able to contribute to such a worthy cause is going to be great!

Let's never forget for who and why we are taking on our cause!
